Summary

PsychoBreak is the Japanese title of The Evil Within, a survival-horror game directed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and developed by Tango Gameworks.

This SteelBook adopts imagery closely tied to the game’s oppressive visual design. The exterior resembles a heavily weathered industrial safe or metal door, complete with combination dials and blood-stained surfaces. The spine carries the PSYCHOBREAK title, while the interior depicts disturbing imagery from the game.

Release & Version Details

This is a standalone SteelBook rather than a standard plastic game case. Its PSYCHOBREAK spine branding distinguishes it from releases using the international The Evil Within title.

The preserved example contains no game.

Why It’s Significant

PsychoBreak marked Mikami’s return to directing a major survival-horror title after his influential work on the Resident Evil series. The SteelBook also preserves the game’s alternative Japanese identity rather than the internationally adopted title.

Preservation Notes

The deliberately distressed artwork can make genuine scratches and wear harder to distinguish from the printed design. Particular attention should therefore be paid to dents, exposed metal along the edges and damage to the clear internal plastic tray.

Trivia & Interesting Facts

  • PsychoBreak was renamed The Evil Within for international markets.
  • It was the first game developed by Tango Gameworks, the studio founded by Shinji Mikami.
  • Mikami served as the game’s director, making it his first major survival-horror directorial project since Resident Evil 4.
  • The exterior artwork deliberately resembles an aged, blood-stained safe rather than using conventional character or key art.
  • The game later received a sequel, The Evil Within 2, in 2017.
